Bilawal Bhutto Zardari On Terrorism: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed hope that his country will be out of the gray list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) soon. Bilawal Bhutto is currently in Samarkand to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. He said that Pakistan wants to fight terrorism and extremism. This is not for being excluded from the FATF list, nor for the sake of the international community, but for our people behind it as a priority. We hope that our country will be out of FATF list soon.

Pakistan has been on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) gray list since 2018. The FATF is continuously investigating Pakistan’s record in funding terrorist activities. According to media reports, Pakistan had sent a letter to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan before the investigation by FATF monitors demanding the arrest of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar Alvi. A delegation of the FATF Asia Pacific Group visited Pakistan from 29 August to 2 September to examine compliance with the 34-point action plan committed with the FATF. Uzbekistan is hosting the SCO 2022, while India will chair the next summit.

Which countries are included in SCO

This is the first in-person SCO summit after the world was hit by the Kovid pandemic, before the in-person summit was held in Bishkek in the year 2019. The SCO currently consists of eight member states (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan). The Shanghai Five, formed in 1996, became the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2001 with the inclusion of Uzbekistan. With the decision of India and Pakistan to accede to the grouping in 2017 and to accept Tehran as full members in 2021, the SCO became one of the largest multilateral organisations. This organization represents about 30 percent of the global GDP and 40 percent of the world’s population.
