Afghanistan And America Conflict: The Taliban today handed over a US Navy veteran detained for more than two years to the United States in exchange for the release of a key ally. This information has been given by Amir Khan Muttaki, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan.

“Today, Mark Frerich was handed over to the US and Haji Bashir Noorzai was handed over to us at Kabul airport,” Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi told a news conference in the capital.

‘The exchange took place after a long conversation’

Amir Khan Muttaki said that Mark Frerich was kidnapped in 2020. At the same time, the foreign minister also told that Haji Bashir Noorzai, a Taliban ally, was imprisoned for 17 years in the US for smuggling heroin. Muttaki said the swap took place “after a long conversation”.

According to the US State Department, “the US Navy veteran was working as a civil engineer on construction projects in Afghanistan when he was abducted.”

Why is Noorzai important to the Taliban?

Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP on Monday that Noorzai did not hold an official position in the Taliban, but that Noorzai provided “strong support, including weapons,” after it emerged as a radical Islamist movement in the 1990s.

Let us tell you that Noorzai spent almost two decades in jail for drug trafficking. He was reportedly close to Mullah Mohammad Omar, the founder of the Taliban movement.

Noorzai contacted US troops in Afghanistan after 2001 and traveled to the US. In 2005, when Noorzai was in New York, she was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment by a US court.

According to Reuters, Noorzai’s lawyer later denied his client was a drug dealer and argued that the charges should be dropped, as US government officials assured him that he would not be arrested.
